Hi, Josh! Welcome to our super blog. This will be the longest posting I put up, I promise! We'll use the blog to keep track of two things -- Ender's progress in Ender's Game and your progress with typing. Here's the breakdown...
You'll be reading everyday, but on Monday, Wednesday, & Friday respond to the standard prompts (more about these below) for your day's reading. [These days might change depending on when your Mom schedules your tutoring this summer.]
You'll also be practicing your typing each day, except Saturdays. Make sure to play a variety of games during the week so you're challenged in different ways. On Saturdays, you'll do your weekly 60-second typing test. The links for the typing games and typing test websites are on the right side of our blog.

Okay, so here are the standard prompts for Ender's Game to which you'll respond on M-W-F. Make sure to write strong, sixth-grader sentences. :)
  • List four (or more) things that happened in your day's reading.
    • This can include events or important things we learn about the main characters' personalities, thoughts, or feelings.
  • Imagine you're Ender, what do you think he/you is feeling right now in the story. Why?
For example...
  1. Ender took off for Battle School in a space ship in zero-gravity with Colonel Graf and a few other kids.
  2. Colonel Graf embarrassed Ender in front of everyone else by saying lots of nice things about him, which made the others jealous of him.
  3. The other kids started teasing him for being a "teacher's pet," and Ender reacted by throwing one of the kids across the space ship.
  4. Ender felt terrible about doing it because he doesn't like fighting.
  5. Colonel Graf thinks that Ender might be a great general in the future and can save humanity from the buggers, but he doesn't tell Ender.
  • I think Ender is feeling very confused because he's being forced to be aggressive. He doesn't like being that way because it reminds him of his brother, Peter, who was mean and hurtful to Ender. Ender is probably scared about the whole situation, but he's trying not to look scared so others won't pick on him.
These are the kinds of sentences you should try to write. It will seem like a lot when you first start, but it will become easier and faster with time and consistency. I promise!☺

    1. Hi Josh,

Great first reply! I can tell you're understanding the story. Two small things to incorporate next time. First, make sure to capitalize all the names (or proper nouns) -- Ender, Dap, etc. You did most of them, but get used to using the "Shift" key to capitalize those first letters.
Second, for your open response you told me WHAT Ender is feeling but you didn't include WHY you think he's feeling that way. That's the most important part of the response so make sure to include WHY. :)
Hope you're having a good one, J-man! Happy Fourth of July!! :)

    2. The reason I had so much mistakes is because the first time I did it, it did not publish so I kind of rushed through it.

  2. Dap walked Ender and 4 other kids to battle training.
The training was for zero gravity control.
Ender was the first one to jump.
After a while, he got the hang of it.

I thing Ender was nervous before he tried it, after he thought it was really fun because he was telling people to try it.

    1. Sounds like it's not so bad. I'd love to try Zero Gravity!!! I wonder if it's going to continue being this mellow. I doubt it!

  3. Ender is in free study time.
During that time the played on his laptop.
At first the game was hard.
He got the hang of it after a while.

I think Ender is starting to understand the school because he is not complaining as much

    1. Good observation, Josh. Quick question, what was the game he was playing and what did Ender think about it?

  4. Ender beat the game.
He bet it by poking the giant in the eye.
The next morning people were asking questions and comments.
the were asking about the game.

I think ender was proud because he beat the game

  5. prediction blog
I think Ender is going to work hard then he is going to be a general. Ender is going to work hard and be a general because people say that he is a very good solder. He wants to win battles and save the world.

    1. Another solid response, Josh. :) Two small things...1. read through your response to check for capitalization and missing periods before posting (your 6th grade teachers will be expecting near perfection with periods and capitals when you start); and 2. How's the typing going? Have you been taking the 60-second test on Saturdays? Is it starting to feel more comfortable and quick? Hope so! :)

  6. Ender and Alai were eating dinner.
They were siting across from each other.
Alai found out how Ender was sending messages.
Ender disagreed that he did it until he broke and said he did it.

I think Ender feels comfortable with the school because he has friends.

  8. Character reflection:
General Graff reminds me of Mr. Boucher, my geography teacher. He reminds me of Graff because they are both strict, but can both be nice. They both encourage children to do good things. Mr. Boucher encourages students to do their homework on time and pay attention in class. General Graff encourages Ender to be a good soldier and save the world.

  9. The main character of the story is Ender, I think Ender is determined because everyone says he is going to be a great solder.
